 On 26 August 2026, the bedrock under the lower part of a mountain glacier near the Langtang Lirung peak, which rises to 23, 734 feet on the crest of the Hindu Kush Himalayas, close to the the Nepal-Tibet border, suddenly collapsed, taking part of the overlying glacial ice with it and setting off an ice-rock avalanche. There was no warning, and the event was not immediately preceded by heavy rainfall. The impact of the glacier as it collapsed onto the floor of the mountain valley below at 8:37 AM local time caused a seismic event of magnitude 5.2, which was initially mistaken for an earthquake. Satellite, drone, and helicopter images, coupled with seismic data, were analysed by the US Geological Survey and at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in the Nepali city of Lalitpur, helping to further define this catastrophic event.

A thick slurry of melting ice, rocks, mud, and debris entered the Lende Khola, a tributary of the Bhote Kosi river, which in turn feeds into the Trishul river. The torrential flow of this water-solid mixture destroyed buildings, bridges, hydroelectric power stations, roads, water supply systems, and vehicles as it surged ahead at high speed, overwhelming everything that stood in its path. Entire villages were washed away, while other communities were cut off by impassable roads and bridges. Workers were trapped inside a complex network of tunnels at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project. Gyirong Port, a major border crossing between Nepal and Tibet and an important hub in China’s Belt and Road network, was engulfed in mud and water. A barrier lake-the consequence of a clogged river system- formed near the confluence of the Chhochen Kola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers, upstream of Gyirong Port.

According to the Nepal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the death toll had reached 903 in the border districts of Nepal, including Rasuwa and Nuwakot, with 4,247 missing by the start of day on 31 August.  An additional 16 deaths and 546 missing were reported from Gyirong County in Tibet. These numbers as expected to rise as more bodies are either washed up or extricated from the build-up of debris. An estimated 3,000 people are missing, including many foreign nationals. The region is popular with hiking tourists with and Hindu pilgrims making their way to the sacred site of Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet.

Search and rescue operations have been hampered by the difficult terrain of steep mountain valleys, fast-moving rivers, piles of rubble, the abundance of slippery mud, and ongoing heavy monsoon rains. The efforts of local providers and Nepal’s army and police forces have been backed up by volunteers from charities and NGOs, and by expert personnel from neighbouring China and India. Some victims have been airlifted to military camps for humanitarian assistance and others to hospitals for medical care. Clearing-up efforts are likely to take months, if not years.

The question is whether such an event is likely to happen again in the near future. A similar devastating glacial collapse in Chamoli district in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand on 7 February 2021, which claimed more than 200 lives, is still fresh in the memory. Available information suggests that a recurrence is more than likely. ICIMOD released two reports on 21 March 2026 to mark World Day for Glaciers. These reports confirmed that glaciers across the Hindu Kush Himalayas, which number over 63,700 and supply at least ten major Asian river systems, are melting at an accelerating rate- at double the rate since 2000.

Detailed analysis of this latest partial glacial collapse is awaited. It is being suggested that colliding tectonic plates, responsible for continuing upward movement of the Himalayas, coupled with melting of glacial ice may have precipitated the sudden collapse. The extent to which global warming may have contributed to this event has yet to be determined by attribution analysis, although such events are more likely to happen as the planet continues to heat up. It should be noted that Nepali Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal appealed to the global community on 29 August, when he said that we should “take climate change as one of the major challenges that Nepal and its citizens face, and this has to be a global effort.” He added: “Despite having only 0.1% contribution to the global emissions, people of Nepal have become major victims of climate change.”

 Longer-term plans for reconstruction of destroyed infrastructure, and a consideration of the relocation of communities and facilities from an area prone to natural disasters will be required. Early-warning systems may have to be set up to help anticipate and mitigate the risk of further events of a similar nature. A further reconsideration of the impact of climate change will also be necessary. Nothing concentrates the mind more than visible and tragic reminders of the consequences of a warming planet. Our sympathies, for the present, must lie with the victims of the latest environmental disaster in northern Nepal and adjoining southern Tibet.
