A controversial one-minute video of uncertain origin began circulating online on 19 October 2026. It soon turned out that it had been released by the campaign team of Vivek Ramaswamy, Republican candidate for the governorship of Ohio, as part of his $4 million ad campaign.  Normally, a video concerning the gubernatorial election in the Midwestern state would be of little interest to most people outside of America. But there was something unusual about this particular release. Donna Arthur, the biological mother of Ramaswamy’s Democratic opponent Dr Amy Acton, was shown criticising her daughter, from whom she had been estranged for four decades. Donna said “I love my daughter. But when I saw her lie about her opponent, it is not easy for a mother to say this, but Amy has a serious problem. She is a liar and lies about her past. She says she grew up living in a tent. None of that is true. She’s lied her entire life. My daughter needs help, and she can’t help you if she needs help herself. Don’t vote for people who lie. Don’t let her become your governor.” Opinions varied, as some considered the ad “despicable”, while some others, including President Trump himself, gave their wholehearted support to its release for public consumption. Ramaswamy himself described it as “an ad about lying”, which had “nothing to do with childhood abuse.”

Vivek Ramaswamy, an “American nationalist”, is a man of many talents. The billionaire venture capitalist, biotech entrepreneur, best-selling author, and self-declared “scientist” has all the right credentials for a MAGA Republican politician. Endorsed by the trinity of Donald Trump, JD Vance-who he met at Yale Law School, and Elon Musk, he meets the requirements of the Trumpian faction of the Republican Party as an “anti-woke candidate” , with all the right views about the Big State, “the climate cult”, identity politics, LGBTQ rights, and abortion-among many others. Born in August 1985 to Indian immigrant professionals in Cincinnati, Ohio, he is undoubtedly a product of the “American Dream.” A graduate of Harvard University (BA 2007), where he was President of the Harvard Political Union and moonlighted as a rapper under the name “Da Vek”, he subsequently obtained a law degree (JD) from Yale Law School in 2013. He reached a high point in his political career when he stood for the Presidency of the US in 2024. Withdrawing from the contest, he went on to endorse Donald Trump, but his reward as co-leader of the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under Trump 2.0 in January 2025 turned out to be a non-starter. Instead, he redirected his attention to the 2026 Ohio gubernatorial election.

Amy Leigh Acton, by contrast, was born in modest circumstances in the Rust Belt town of Youngstown, Ohio, in February 1966. After her parents divorced, she grew up with her mother and stepfather Cledith Arthur, who allegedly physically sexually abused her between December 1976 and April 1978. Her stepfather was charged with rape in July 1978, but failed to appear in court that October and spent his remaining years as a fugitive in the neighbouring state of Pennsylvania, where he died in 2004. The allegations of childhood abuse were recently corroborated by Amy’s younger brother Philip Stearns. Amy obtained a bachelor’s degree from the less- prestigious Youngstown State University before qualifying as doctor at Northeastern Ohio Medical University. Following residencies in paediatrics and public health, she was served as an associate professor at Ohio State University; a grants manager at the Columbus Foundation, a non-profit charitable organisation in Columbus, Ohio; and Director of the Ohio Department of Health from 2019 to 2020, when she helped coordinate the state’s response to COVID-19 pandemic.

Amy Acton announced her candidacy for the 2026 Ohio gubernatorial election on 7 January 2025, followed by Vivek Ramaswamy on 15 February. At the time, Donald J. Trump took to Truth Social to declare that Vivek “will be a GREAT Governor of Ohio, will never let you down, and has my COMPLETE AND TOTAL ENDORSEMENT!’

The contrast between the candidates for the governorship of Ohio is particularly striking. Whatever the relative merits and demerits of the two candidates, recent words and actions speak for themselves. The Democrat candidate, a former public health doctor from the wrong side of the tracks, is up against a driven and unapologetic Republican opponent from the ranks of the political elite. It seems that, with regard to the ad targeting Amy Acton, the GOP campaign has aimed far below the belt and revealed the extent to which somewhat desperate candidates, consistently trailing in the polls, are prepared to go to gain the attention of the American voting public. May the worthiest candidate triumph in the forthcoming midterm elections.
